Our planet is heating up, our oceans are rising and our land is being depleted for agriculture. So how can we help?
As part of our Slothers leisurewear brand philosophy we are always promoting and talking about living a greener, healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. ‘Living the Slothlife’ as we like to call it, but what does this actually mean?.
To us it’s a way of life, it’s our culture. We do not believe in strict regimes, but we realise that each individual has an identity based on their own choices, experiences and background. Each individual has a different way of life that suits them. We seek to inspire, motivate and guide not only our fellow sloths but ourselves as well. We want to strive towards a world where we can improve health and well-being. At the same time, we want to enhance our surroundings and rekindle our spiritual connection to the planet that we are so reliant on.
It’s not just our planet that is suffering, but also mental and physical health seems to be on the rise. Mankind’s love for the outdoors can easily be forgotten with all the stresses of the modern world. We strongly believe that technology is positive and can enhance our lives, but sometimes going back to a simpler way of life doesn’t have to be regarded as a step backward.
Slothers was dreamt up in 2012 for a Business Studies project at University. The brand was all about comfort and quality; we drew inspiration from the slow-paced South American Sloth. During a trip to the Amazon Rainforest in 2014, we witnessed first-hand the effects that humans have had on the planet and on the Sloths that inhabit it. We knew from then on that we wanted to live a sustainable lifestyle that worked with the environment, not against it.
Since then, we have slowly gone about changing our own lifestyles, and to do so we broke it down into 4 manageable areas. We believe these areas will not only have a positive impact on your own lives, but the life of everything around you.
It is important to remember that by no means do we think that we are we perfect, and we don’t expect you to be either. It’s about finding out what works for you and discovering the joy and beauty of the natural world in the process.
What is a greener lifestyle?
‘Green living’ is a lifestyle that tries (in as many ways as it can), to bring into balance the conservation and preservation of the Earth’s natural resources, habitats, and biodiversity with human culture and communities. Implementing green practices into your home or office can help reduce waste, conserve natural resources, improve both air and water quality, and protect ecosystems and biodiversity.
To us, green living is all about enjoying nature. Getting outside and exploring the wonders that the natural world has to offer. Activities practiced outdoors are known to have higher benefits than exercise done indoors. Just a walk in the woods or even a quick trip to a park can help lessen depression and anxiety, reduce stress, improve short term memory and reduce mental fatigue. Other health benefits of being outdoors including improving quality of sleep, focus and concentration, as well as helping your body to recuperate – it even makes your sense of smell more acute.
We think nature tends to create the best playgrounds. As humans, we evolved to use this to our advantage, from surfing to skiing. There is endless amounts of fun to be had when you walk out of the front door. Living a greener lifestyle is about pursuing the knowledge and practices that can lead us to a more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible way of thinking. This will help us to protect the environment and sustain its natural resources, while improving our own mental and physical health and well-being.
What better way to do this than by experiencing the world for yourself?.
What is a healthier Lifestyle?
A healthy lifestyle is one which helps to keep and improve health and well-being. It has both short and long term health benefits. In the long term, eating a balanced diet and taking regular exercise will help to maintain a healthy weight which can add years to your life. A healthier lifestyle also reduces the risk of certain diseases including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity.
From a personal viewpoint, we have battled with our own health problems (to find out more, click here). We decided to take a leaf out of a Sloth’s book and change our diet from a meat heavy one, to a whole food plant based diet. Just like Veganism, people who eat a whole-food, plant based diet also avoid animal products such as meat, dairy and eggs. This way of eating consists of consuming unprocessed or minimally processed veggies, fruit, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds. From personal experiences the results of changing our diets have been pretty remarkable and surprised us both.
We strongly promote a plant based diet. Our recipe page is full of amazing dishes and treats created by Gabi Goes Green. Although a plant based diet might not be for everyone, the point that we are trying to make is that diet plays a huge role in our health. This is something that we all can change today. Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Combined with physical activity, your diet can have huge implications on your health, physically and mentally.
In the end, it’s about finding the right diet that suits you. We know that health is something that can easily be pushed to the backburner with so many other seemingly important life matters to deal with. But when did work, money and social status become more important than our own health?.
Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be a chore. Simply thinking about what we are putting into our bodies, and where it has come from, can be the start of your journey to a healthier lifestyle.
What is a sustainable lifestyle?
Sustainable living is about working towards a lifestyle that reduces the use of the earth’s natural resources. Practitioners of sustainable living often attempt to reduce their carbon footprint by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption and diet.
Mankinds current way of living sees us placing increasing amounts of pressure on the economies around the world. We are also faced with the rise in inflation and ever increasing living costs. We believe a move to greater sustainability, in all aspects of life, is critical to our future. We only have one earth. It is time to reduce our harmful impact on the planet. We follow the notion that humans should live in harmony with nature rather than dominate it.
A popular movement crossing the globe is the ‘Zero Waste’ movement. This movement is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills or incinerators. The process recommended is one similar to the way that resources are reused in nature. At this moment in time it is nearly impossible to go about our daily lives without leaving any kind of footprint on the natural world. Making a few changes to reduce the amount of waste you create is a great step in the right direction.
But there is more to achieving a sustainable world. For starters, we still have extreme poverty and hunger, our environment is unstable, over consumption is a problem and not everyone has the right to education. The list goes on.
Therefore the goal of sustainable development is to meet the needs of today, without compromising the needs of tomorrow. This means we cannot continue using current levels of resources as this will not leave enough for future generations.
What is a balanced lifestyle?
Balance is a feeling derived from being whole and complete, it’s a sense of harmony. Our lives are made up of many vital areas; health, family, financial, social, work, spiritual, recreation, personal and romance. Finding balance is essential to maintaining quality in life.
Having a balanced lifestyle (also known as work life balance), refers to a lifestyle in which a healthy balance exists between time and effort spent working, time spent at home, with family and chasing personal pursuits. There is always someone, or something, to answer to. There are things we want to do and things we must. Whether we work, go to school or are retired, we all have responsibilities. A well balanced life is essential for personal effectiveness, peace of mind and living well.
This is easier said than done. Its one that I know I personally struggle with and I am sure there have been times when you feel that your life is completely out of sync. Every one of us has a different way of relaxing and finding a peaceful place. It could be yoga, meditation or just slothing out in front of the TV. Whatever it is, we understand the importance of ‘me’ time. We believe that sometimes this is the best solution, allowing yourself to be brought back to the present moment.
The challenge is to balance what we must do, with what we enjoy and choose to do. This is not always easy and if we are unable to reduce stress and manage a well-balanced life there can be physical and/or emotional health consequences.
How do we put this all together?
This may seem like a lot to change. But once you have made a couple of small changes you will realise that there is a lot of cross overs. Before you know it, you will have made other changes without out even realising it.
What shocks us most is the fact that the fun and happiness of life is seemingly disappearing. The beauty that we see on a daily basis goes by unnoticed. We are guilty of this too and in a world that moves at 100 mph, sometimes it is hard to slow down. All that is needed is for us to take a step backwards to evaluate and analyse the next move.
Just remember, just because sloths usually move slowly, it doesn’t mean they’re physically limited to a snail’s pace. In other words, live life at your own pace and make sure that you stop to appreciate it once in a while.
We are also on this journey and every one of us is different. We believe we can make a difference by changing the things in our control. Our mission is to start by helping you and ourselves to live a greener, healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
Life is an adventure; our planet is our playground, so make a difference today.
